Monday Meme – Musical Mondays Returns

5 05 2008

It’s been a while since we did a Musical Monday here on Textual Relations and the first thing Mr President noticed when going back was that there’s now a theme every week. It’s not obligatory but it adds a certain element of challenge to it. Anyone can just think of a song and “do” the meme but trying to find a song to fit a theme can be tricky. The theme this week is springtime.

There are a couple of reasons why the song he chose, Feeling Good by Muse, makes him think of Springtime. First there are the lyrics, not just the references to nature but also use of the words “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life”. Of course the song isn’t about spring, but the metaphors used certainly conjure up spring imagery.

However there’s a more personal reason, and this (as well as the fact it’s the best version, even better than the original by Nina Simone) is why he chose the Muse version of the song. Yes, Buble’s version is very James Bond but it’s actually a pretty average song when he does it. Though Nina may have given it to the world, Muse took the uncut diamond and perfected it. Yet the reason he chose their version was none of that.

No, it was because back in June last year, at Wembley Stadium, El Presidente saw them live and during their live set, behind them on a huge curved screen that dominated the view, there was a video of a bee flying through an idyllic springtime setting. Suddenly the song had a new meaning, a spring theme that he for one had never really ascribed to it before. Anyway, enough chitchat, time to get on with business. The song:

The lyrics:

Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Reeds drifting on by
You know how I feel
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me..
And I’m feeling good

Fish in the sea
You know how I feel
River running free
You know how I feel
Blossom in the trees
You know how I feel
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me…
And I’m feeling good

Dragonfly out in the sun
You know what I mean, don’t you know
Butterflies all having fun
You know what I mean
Sleep in peace
When, the this day is done
And this old world
Is a new world
And a bold world
For me…

Stars when you shine
You know how I feel
Scent of the pine
You know how I feel
Yeah, freedom is mine
And you know how I feel
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me…

Yeah, ooh
Oh, ooh…

Oooh, ooh..free, free loving you…
Oooh, oooh
Feeling good

Last FM Radio spat out:

1) Shining Light by Ash (A song Mr President also loves)

2) Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys (Another favourite of his)

3) Supply And Demand By The Hives (He likes the band but the song is new on him)

4) Music Box By The Cooper Temple Clause (Knows the band, not the song)

5) The Story By 30 Seconds To Mars (The band are hit and miss, this is a miss)

Update: It appears that the theme was rain, but Mr President swears that post wasn’t up when he went to visit. He didn’t even notice that the date was last week’s. Oops.
